Today's Fact
Succession planning at A.I.M. means building the replacement before the incumbent notices — and giving her somebody else's name, face and marriage.
A.I.M. has a recurring personnel problem: its greatest creation keeps murdering the management and seizing the company. One attempted solution was a second organism. An A.I.M. agent was mutated into a huge-headed being in M.O.D.O.K.'s own mould and delivered to the West Coast Avengers in West Coast Avengers Vol. 2 #36 (1988) — where she introduced herself as Maria Trovaya Pym, the first wife of Hank Pym, believed dead for decades.
Pym took her in and worked to cure her, which was precisely the plan: she was a spy, and she stole his files before returning to A.I.M. There she was rebuilt further as S.O.D.A.M. — Specialized Organism Designed for Aggressive Maneuvers — and later renamed M.O.D.A.M., Mental Organism Designed for Aggressive Maneuvers. Her first assignment under the new name, in Quasar Vol. 1 #9 (1990), was stealing Quasar's quantum bands.
Was she really Maria? Omega Red later insisted she was Olinka Barankova, a woman who had once betrayed him. Her own answer may be the most honest sentence A.I.M. ever produced: the organisation's personnel files, she pointed out, are routinely falsified. The replacement built to be more manageable than M.O.D.O.K. ended as an identity nobody could audit.
Why It's Obscure
M.O.D.O.K. got a bride built for him once and unmade her within the hour. His employers' next attempt wore a dead Avenger's marriage — and kept her own counsel about all of it.
