Today's Fact
Personnel management, Superior-style: kill the applicant’s best friend, hand her a uniform, and act surprised when she unionises against you.
By 2016, M.O.D.O.K. Superior had rebranded his operation as the Mercenary Organization Dedicated Only to Killing — the acronym, mercifully, unchanged. Then a nobody named Gwen Poole killed his best agent on a Teuthidan arms job and took credit for the work. In The Unbelievable Gwenpool Vol. 1 #1 (2016), M.O.D.O.K. tracked her down to fill the vacancy.
His recruitment method was a firing and a hiring in one blast: he incinerated Cecil, the hacker Gwen had just befriended, and informed the traumatised mercenary that she now worked for him. Her elite squadmates were Batroc the Leaper, the alchemist Mega Tony and the sorceress Terrible Eye — Batroc, history’s most unlikely HR department, gave her basic combat and firearms training.
The head of human resources lasted four issues. With training from Batroc and hacking help from Cecil — returned as a ghost, courtesy of Doctor Strange — Gwen fought M.O.D.O.K. Superior, wrecked his chair’s systems and booted him into space. Then she simply took his job: the conscript became head of M.O.D.O.K., ran his agents as her own crew, and held the organisation until a destroyed base and empty accounts dissolved it around her.
Why It's Obscure
A.I.M. built him to compute. A teenager from the real world out-computed him with a dead hacker, a borrowed résumé and four issues of audacity.
