Today's Fact
Even a living supercomputer looks at the payroll eventually — and A.I.M.'s payroll problem had fur.
In Fantastic Four: ¡Ataque Del M.O.D.O.K.! Vol. 1 #1 (2010), M.O.D.O.K. set up in Ponce, Puerto Rico, with a workforce solution only he could love: an army of genetically enhanced monkeys, branded the A.I.Monkeys. His reasoning, delivered with total sincerity to his captives, was accounting — A.I.M. was being squeezed by the Great Recession, and engineered primates were simply cheaper than employing henchmen.
The scheme ran into the two worst tourists imaginable. Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman were vacationing on the island when the local rookie hero El Vejigante — a young man bonded to the land itself, unable to leave Puerto Rico without disappearing — pulled them into the fight. The three were captured, escaped through the base's single-pattern force field, and battled M.O.D.O.K. and his monkey army while the reactor core climbed toward meltdown.
The surrender, when it came, was not negotiated by Reed's genius. Sealed inside one of Sue's force bubbles with the explosion ticking closer, M.O.D.O.K. agreed to stand down after the Invisible Woman deployed what the heroes on the scene describe as her angry mother voice. The mastermind of A.I.M., terror of the intelligence world, folded to being told off — and he and his monkeys were handed over to the authorities together.
Why It's Obscure
World domination kept failing on the hero line item. Nobody warned him the monkey line item came with mothers.
