Today's Fact

The deadliest acronym in science got a dating profile and a spray tan.

M.O.D.O.K. REBUILT HIMSELF AS B.R.O.D.O.K. — A HUNKY BODY, ROMANCE CODE, AND A NEW PURPOSE: KISSING!
The Featured Fact

In 2018 the Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing filed for a rebrand. Surfacing in Los Angeles in West Coast Avengers Vol. 3 #1–2 (2018), by Kelly Thompson and Stefano Caselli, he introduced himself as B.R.O.D.O.K. — Bio-Robotic Organism Designed Overwhelmingly for Kissing — complete with a sculpted new body, flowing blond hair, a tan, and freshly installed romance code. His head, witnesses noted, remained slightly too large for the frame. Nobody on the team was fooled for a second.

The makeover carried a sales pitch. B.R.O.D.O.K. claimed to run Advanced Image Mechanics, a plastic-surgery firm promising ordinary clients heroic physiques, and presented his own remodel as the showroom model. The pitch curdled quickly: women who rejected his advances found themselves “enhanced” against their will — Tigra swelled to gigantic size, and Hawkeye Kate Bishop was briefly transformed into an enormous bird.

The West Coast Avengers closed the experiment with his own technology: Clint Barton and Quentin Quire turned the undoing equipment on its inventor, and by West Coast Avengers Vol. 3 #4 (2018) B.R.O.D.O.K. had reverted to the giant head and hoverchair of classic M.O.D.O.K. The romance code was not retained in the rollback. The kissing era lasted four issues.

Why It's Obscure

A supervillain diagnosed his rejection problem, concluded it was a branding problem, and hired himself as the cure.

The acronym
Respelling the joke — Marvel has been re-lettering this gag for decades: M.O.D.O.C. for Computing at his creation, Ms. M.O.D.O.K. back in Incredible Hulk #290. B.R.O.D.O.K. remains the only variant engineered entirely around being dateable.
Advanced Image Mechanics
Same initials, new industry — even the cover story kept the brand: A.I.M. simply pivoted from weapons research to cosmetic surgery, because a leopard cannot change its spots but can absolutely reincorporate them.
Kate Bishop
The target demographic — the team’s Hawkeye was B.R.O.D.O.K.’s chosen recipient for a kiss and, later, for involuntary avian enhancement; she appears in today’s gallery in her usual, un-feathered configuration.
2018
Farce with teeth — Thompson and Caselli’s run played the saga as comedy built on a genuinely ugly engine: a predator who interpreted every refusal as a marketing failure.
