A.I.M. RESURRECTED M.O.D.O.K. TO PLUG A COSMIC CUBE MELTDOWN — SO HE WALKED INTO THE BEYONDERS' DIMENSION INSTEAD!
The Featured Fact

A decade after A.I.M. had its own leader assassinated, the organization swallowed its pride and rebuilt him. In Avengers Vol. 1 #387 (1995), A.I.M. resurrected M.O.D.O.K. for one specific job: a fragment of a new Cosmic Cube on Boca Caliente was overloading, tearing a warp into the dimension the Cube's energies came from, and the scientists who designed M.O.D.O.C. to study Cubes decided only their living computer could seal it.

The resurrection had a price tag even A.I.M. noticed. Reference accounts of the period record that bringing M.O.D.O.K. back was powered by sacrificing M.O.D.A.M. — the female successor organism A.I.M. had built to replace him — trading one giant-headed superweapon for the original model.

Then, in Avengers Vol. 1 #388 (1995), standing before the open warp while Captain America's shield lay broken in the rubble, M.O.D.O.K. declined the assignment as written. Understanding the Cube, he reasoned, required understanding its origins — so instead of sealing the breach from this side, he rose into it and journeyed to the Beyond, the home dimension of the Beyonders themselves. He stayed gone until the Headmen fished him back in Defenders Vol. 2 #10 (2001).

Why It's Obscure

A.I.M. brought him back as a repairman for a hole in reality. He treated the hole as a doorway and billed it as research.

1986
Dead by their own order — A.I.M. had M.O.D.O.K. assassinated years earlier; the Boca Caliente crisis forced the same organization to reverse the decision.
1995
Rebuilt for one job — Avengers #387: A.I.M. resurrects M.O.D.O.K. to contain the runaway energies of its new Cosmic Cube fragment.
The price
M.O.D.A.M. spent — Accounts of the resurrection record that A.I.M. sacrificed M.O.D.A.M., M.O.D.O.K.'s designated successor, to power his return.
#388
Into the Beyond — Rather than seal the warp, M.O.D.O.K. flies into the Cube's home dimension to study it from inside, and is absent until Defenders Vol. 2 #10.

  2. Avengers (1st series) #388 — UncannyXMen.netThe issue summary narrates the climax: the failed containment fields, the trans-dimensional warp to the Cube's origin, and M.O.D.O.K. deciding it is incumbent on him to journey into the place his creators named the Beyond.
