M.O.D.O.K. DEFECTED TO S.H.I.E.L.D., JOINED THE SECRET AVENGERS — AND FELL IN LOVE WITH DIRECTOR MARIA HILL!
The Featured Fact

When Scientist Supreme Andrew Forson seized control of A.I.M. and remade it in his own image, M.O.D.O.K. did the one thing nobody had on their bingo card: he surrendered. In Secret Avengers Vol. 2 #12 (2014) he sought protective custody with S.H.I.E.L.D. against Forson's A.I.M., leading a party of defecting A.I.M. scientists aboard Director Maria Hill's helicarrier and trading six secret weapons bases for asylum.

Hill took the deal, and by Secret Avengers Vol. 3 #1 (2014) the Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing was working alongside Hawkeye and Spider-Woman as a S.H.I.E.L.D. asset. True to form he spent his first issues plotting to take S.H.I.E.L.D. over from within — and then the plot quietly died of an occupational hazard no A.I.M. scientist had ever screened him for.

He fell in love with Hill. The series' own checklist of his career records the turn without embarrassment: by Secret Avengers Vol. 3 #8 he realizes he is in love with Maria Hill, and by #15 he has genuinely joined the Secret Avengers against his own takeover plot. The living supercomputer built to study a Cosmic Cube ended his S.H.I.E.L.D. career as something A.I.M. never programmed — a defector who stayed for the director.

Why It's Obscure

A.I.M. built him to compute. S.H.I.E.L.D. gave him a desk, a team and a crush his programming had no variable for.
