A.I.M. BUILT A LIVING COMPUTER — AND IT RENAMED ITSELF FOR KILLING!
The Featured Fact

Before the giant head, the Doomsday Chair, and the world-conquest schemes, there was just George Tarleton — an ordinary, lowly A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics) technician. A.I.M. had just created the Cosmic Cube, and it needed a mind big enough to study and improve it. So its scientists picked Tarleton, forced him into the Alteration Chamber, and mutated him with advanced mutagenics into a living computer.

Here is the part most retellings skip: he was not born M.O.D.O.K. His first name was M.O.D.O.C. — Mental Organism Designed Only for Computing. The mutation worked exactly as designed and then some: his brain swelled to superhuman intellect, he gained psychic and psionic powers, and his body withered around his giant cranium until he needed a weaponized life-support hoverchair — the Doomsday Chair — just to move.

The computer, it turned out, had ambitions beyond computing. Tarleton murdered his creators, including the Scientist Supreme, seized control of A.I.M., and gave himself a promotion in the form of a single-letter edit: he re-dubbed himself M.O.D.O.K. — Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing. A.I.M. built a machine to think. The machine decided to kill. His full reveal came in Tales of Suspense #94 (October 1967), by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby, where he announces it himself: "Once, I was a mere human guinea pig for the scientists of AIM!... I AM THEIR MASTER!!"

Why It's Obscure

Everyone knows the giant head. Almost nobody remembers that the "K" in M.O.D.O.K. was a self-awarded promotion — A.I.M. hired him to compute, and his first act as a super-genius was to rebrand himself for murder and take over the company that made him.

1967
Tales of Suspense #93 (Sept 1967) — M.O.D.O.K.'s cameo, then his full reveal in #94 (Oct 1967), by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby. In his own words: "Once, I was a mere human guinea pig for the scientists of AIM!... I AM THEIR MASTER!!" The employee review came with a body count.
C → K
The one-letter rebrand. M.O.D.O.C. stood for Computing; M.O.D.O.K. stands for Killing. He did not just take over A.I.M. — he edited his own job description, and the new title stuck for nearly sixty years. Human Resources never recovered.
1967
The Cosmic Cube connection. A.I.M. did not mutate Tarleton for fun — the experiment existed to analyze and improve the Cosmic Cube it had just created. The living computer was a research tool that immediately unionized, violently, into management.
Trivia
Even Tarleton's résumé is disputed. Marvel Database notes several conflicting accounts of his pre-A.I.M. life: a skilled technician from Erie, Pennsylvania in one, a Bangor, Maine native whose father said he was hired as a janitor in another. The one thing every account agrees on: the job ended badly for his bosses.
2010
The human came back. In Hulk (2010), Amadeus Cho restored Tarleton to human form — and a M.O.D.O.K. clone, M.O.D.O.K. Superior, was created to replace him. The original employee left the building; the job title stayed.
