Today's Fact
The house always wins, the proverb says. In Las Vegas in 2018 the house was a hotel in Hell, the dealer was its owner, and the proverb lost.
After Hydra's occupation left Las Vegas in ruins, Doctor Strange used his restored magic to raise the city and its dead. The resurrection dragged something up with it: the Hotel Inferno, a casino run by Mephisto — because the ruined city had landed in his realm when it fell, and its people's souls had been filed away in his vault, each one trapped inside the gold bars and banknotes of the house.
Mephisto proposed a wager worthy of the venue: a game of brimstone blackjack, Strange's own soul against the trapped souls and the demon's departure from the city. Strange took the hand and won it — the accounts agree he cheated to do it — and demanded the house honour the result.
The house did no such thing. Shown the cheat, Mephisto had Strange seized, tortured and briefly turned into a Ghost Rider. The rescue inverted the whole casino: Wong and the Midnight Sons fought through the city, Johnny Blaze led an army of Spirits of Vengeance against Mephisto inside Hell itself, and the event closed with the devil imprisoned in a magically fortified penthouse on top of his own hotel.
Why It's Obscure
A wager he designed, in a building he owned, against a mortal he underestimated — the loss is preserved in triplicate because he kept changing the terms.
