Today's Fact

Read the contract the way he does and the miracle curdles: the disease was cured, the man was not saved, and both halves were the deal.

MEPHISTO CURED A DYING MAN'S CANCER — AND COLLECTED ON THE LOOPHOLE WHEN THE MAN DIED ON A MOTORCYCLE INSTEAD!
The Featured Fact

Stunt rider Johnny Blaze learned that his surrogate father, Crash Simpson, was dying of cancer, and did what desperate men in Marvel comics do: he studied the occult and performed a summoning meant to call Satan himself. What answered was Mephisto. In Marvel Spotlight Vol. 1 #5 (1972), Blaze sold his soul on one precise condition — that Crash be spared the cancer that was killing him.

Mephisto kept the bargain to the letter. The cancer vanished. Then Crash, cured and fearless, attempted a jump over 22 cars — and died in the crash. When Blaze screamed betrayal, Mephisto pointed at the wording: he had promised to spare Crash the disease, not to grant him life. The devil had honoured the contract and collected the corpse anyway.

He nearly collected Blaze too. Roxanne Simpson drove him off by proclaiming her love for Johnny — an act of purity Mephisto could not stand against — and cheated of the soul, he took revenge instead: he bound Blaze to the demon Zarathos, and the stunt rider woke as the flaming-skulled Ghost Rider. One loophole, one curse, and an entire supernatural franchise rolled out of the fine print.

Why It's Obscure

Most of his bargains fail at the collection stage. This one failed at the drafting stage — his victim’s, that is, and Mephisto has been billing him for it since 1972.

The wording
Spared the cancer, full stop — Blaze bargained against a disease, not against death, and Mephisto treats grammar the way other predators treat throats.
22 cars
The fatal encore — Cured, Crash Simpson attempted to jump 22 cars and died doing it; the miracle lasted exactly as long as the stunt schedule allowed.
Roxanne
Purity as a weapon — Roxanne Simpson’s declaration of love repelled Mephisto at the moment of collection — the one clause he never drafts for.
Zarathos
Revenge, bonded — Denied the soul, Mephisto fused Blaze to the ancient demon Zarathos, inventing the Ghost Rider as a consolation prize for himself.
