Today's Fact

The purest soul in the cosmos was in his grasp, priced against the real estate it was standing on.

MEPHISTO FINALLY WON THE SILVER SURFER'S SOUL — AND SURRENDERED IT WHEN GALACTUS STARTED EATING HELL ITSELF!
The Featured Fact

For years Mephisto had schemed for the one prize that kept escaping him: the utterly pure soul of the Silver Surfer. In Marvel Graphic Novel Vol. 1 #38 (1988), Silver Surfer: Judgment Day, he worked the angle through another herald entirely, bending the mind of Nova, Galactus's current herald, so she led her master to inhabited worlds without hesitation.

When the Surfer confronted her, Galactus punished both heralds by stranding them on the planet they had fought over. Trapped and desperate to stop the devouring, the Surfer finally signed: his soul to Mephisto in exchange for freedom. Mephisto collected both heralds into his realm — and then Galactus came through the door in person, demanding his property back, and the two powers fought hard enough to put the universe itself at risk.

The Surfer's suggestion ended it. Galactus simply began to feed on Mephisto's realm, treating the kingdom of flame and darkness as a meal. Faced with losing the seat of his own power, Mephisto conceded the whole game: Galactus, Nova and the Silver Surfer walked out with their souls intact, and the devil's oldest prize slipped through his fingers at the exact moment he had finally closed them around it.

Why It's Obscure

Every other mark Mephisto ever played could be haggled with. Galactus does not haggle; Galactus gets hungry.

Nova
The bait was a herald — Mephisto never attacked the Surfer head-on here; he corrupted Nova's conscience first and let the Surfer come running to save her.
The bargain
Signed at last — Stranded by Galactus's own punishment, the Surfer traded his soul for a way off the planet — the deal Mephisto had chased since the 1960s.
The fight
Too big for the room — Their battle inside Mephisto's realm carried enough power that the Surfer feared for the universe, which is what pushed him to propose the exit.
The exit
Hell, served buffet-style — A realm is a devil's strength and his address at once; once Galactus started eating the address, the strength stopped mattering.
