Today's Fact

Hell’s succession plan was assembled from raw material no sane lord would touch.

MEPHISTO BUILT HIMSELF A SON OUT OF CENTURIES OF MURDER — THEN THE BOY KILLED HIM AND TOOK HIS THRONE!
The Featured Fact

Hell’s royal family started as a crime scene. For centuries, a hill in Christ’s Crown, New York soaked up murders and misery until the accumulated evil physically sprouted otherworldly thorns. The saturation drew Mephisto himself, who shaped that stored wickedness into a “son” — Blackheart — in Daredevil Vol. 1 #270 (1989), by Ann Nocenti and John Romita Jr. The newborn demon’s first act was to kill both a rapist and his victim.

Mephisto tutored his creation personally, sending him out to study evil by attempting to corrupt the incorruptible. Blackheart failed against Daredevil and Spider-Man, endured further lessons in his father’s realm alongside captive Inhumans, and gradually reached an heir’s classic conclusion: the old devil’s methods were outdated, and the throne would look better with somebody younger on it.

The coup ran through three of Marvel’s most violent men. Blackheart lured Ghost Rider, the Punisher and Wolverine to Christ’s Crown hoping to recruit them as assassins, then used the chaos of their war to anoint a blade with an innocent’s blood and apparently slay Mephisto outright — banishing his father from Hell and seizing a portion of the realm for himself. Mephisto, being Mephisto, declined to stay dead; he eventually reclaimed his seat, and father and son settled into an eternity of trying to out-scheme each other.

Why It's Obscure

The devil outsourced his legacy to a pile of other people’s sins, and the pile had opinions.

Christ’s Crown
Evil as a crop — one small New York locality grew so saturated with bloodshed that wickedness became a harvestable resource; Mephisto gathered centuries of it the way other lords gather taxes.
1989
A Daredevil debut — Blackheart first appeared in a street-level crime book, of all places: Daredevil #270 interrupted Matt Murdock’s Hell’s Kitchen for the birth of a Hell-prince, thorn-crowned like the bramble patch that spawned him.
The tutors
Field trips from Hell — Mephisto staged corruption seminars for his heir, hauling Daredevil, the engineered Number Nine, and the Inhumans Gorgon, Karnak and Ahura into his realm as teaching materials.
Patricide
Short reign — with a dagger tipped by an innocent girl’s blood, Blackheart slew his maker and ruled a slice of Hell, until Noble Kale’s Ghost Rider overthrew him and Mephisto resumed collecting rent on the throne.
