Today's Fact

Five years after her debut, the queen of the Inhumans answered a recruitment pitch in Avengers Mansion — and joined a team that existed for a single issue.

MEDUSA WAS A LADY LIBERATOR FOR EXACTLY ONE NIGHT — ON A TEAM FOUNDED BY A WOMAN WHO DIDN'T EXIST!
The Featured Fact

In The Avengers Vol. 1 #83 (December 1970), a newcomer calling herself Valkyrie summoned the women of the Avengers' circle to a secret meeting — and Medusalith Amaquelin, Medusa, queen of the Inhumans, came. Alongside the Wasp, the Scarlet Witch and the Black Widow, she agreed to strike out on her own as a founding member of the Lady Liberators, an all-women team built to prove the men had been coasting on their work.

The Liberators got their proof the same night. While the male Avengers were in Rutland, Vermont, for Tom Fagan's Halloween parade, the Masters of Evil — Klaw, the Melter, Radioactive Man and Whirlwind — ambushed and beat them. The Lady Liberators arrived and won the fight the men had lost, Medusa's living hair in the thick of it, and the issue's cover says the rest: Valkyrie standing over the fallen Avengers, promising that from now on it was the Lady Liberators' world.

Then the founder took off her face. "Valkyrie" was Amora the Enchantress in disguise — her powers halved by Odin's banishment, she had invented a leader, a grievance and a team purely to reach a parallel-time device that could restore her. The Scarlet Witch broke the spell and turned it back on her, the Liberators disbanded before the night was out, and Medusa never wore the team's name again: her whole career as a Lady Liberator fits inside one December issue.

Why It's Obscure

One night in Vermont: a borrowed name, a rigged revolution, and a rescue the Avengers never asked for.

The pitch
Valkyrie aimed the argument at the throne — she pointed out to Medusa that the queen of the Inhumans lived under the rule of Black Bolt, a king who could not even speak, while she did the talking for the two of them.
The billing
Guest-star royalty — the cover of Avengers #83 bills her as "the magnificent Medusa," top-line treatment for a heroine whose entire run with the team lasted a single evening.
The impostor
The founder was a costume — the Enchantress invented Valkyrie's name, look and tragic origin wholesale; the genuine Valkyrie, Brunnhilde, only inherited the identity afterwards.
The encore
Thirty-eight years of silence — the Lady Liberators stayed disbanded until She-Hulk revived the name in Hulk Vol. 2 #7 (2008), and Medusa was not on that roster; her Liberators career remains one night in 1970.
