Today's Fact

Recruiting a super-team is hard. Recruiting one by quietly editing your future teammates' minds, and hoping nobody audits the counsellor, is harder to forgive.

STAR-LORD HAD MANTIS SECRETLY PUSH THE GUARDIANS INTO JOINING — THE MODERN TEAM WAS PARTLY HER TELEPATHIC SUGGESTION!
The Featured Fact

When Peter Quill assembled the modern Guardians of the Galaxy in 2008, the roster came together suspiciously well for a group of traumatised loners. Marvel's own histories record why: Quill had Mantis, serving as the team's informal counsellor, use her mental gifts to psychically influence Drax, Phyla-Vell, Gamora and a newly resurrected Adam Warlock into signing on.

It was framed as triage. Two Annihilation wars had gutted the galaxy, Quill wanted a team that would strike threats before they metastasised, and volunteers were scarce. Mantis — who had foreseen disaster before and let herself be imprisoned during the Conquest just to be in position to help — agreed to lean, gently and repeatedly, on the minds of people she would then have to live beside.

The secret surfaced during the Skrull-infiltration paranoia of the Secret Invasion period, and it landed exactly as mind-editing always lands. The Guardians' trust collapsed, the team fractured and disbanded for a time, and Mantis was left carrying the guilt for a deception she had performed at her captain's request.

Why It's Obscure

Every Guardians retelling keeps the jailbreak recruitment and drops the footnote that several founding members were, in part, hypnotised into the group photo.

The pushed
A roster with an asterisk — Drax, Phyla-Vell, Gamora and Adam Warlock all received Mantis's telepathic nudge; the team's founding charter quietly included non-consent.
The counsellor problem
Confession booth, compromised — Mantis doubled as the Guardians' counsellor, meaning the teammate hearing everyone's private fears was the same one who had edited several of their decisions.
Knowhere
A headquarters inside a head — the manipulated team was based on Knowhere, a severed Celestial head staffed by a telepathic dog; by local standards, one more psychic secret barely registered.
The split
Rocket kept the lights on — after the revelation broke the original lineup, Rocket Raccoon promoted Mantis to field status in his offshoot roster, valuing the honesty of the fallout over the comfort of the lie.
