Today's Fact

A family reunion staged mid-battle, with a criminal cartel as the venue.

MANTIS’S FATHER WAS THE BLIND ZODIAC CRIME LORD LIBRA — HE BETRAYED HIS OWN CARTEL TO FREE THE AVENGERS AND TELL HER THE TRUTH!
The Featured Fact

The most dangerous man in the room during Mantis’s first Zodiac battle turned out to be her dad. Gustav Brandt, a German mercenary, had married Lua Nguyen in Vietnam; her brother, the crime boss Monsieur Khruul, tried to murder the couple for it. Lua died in the attack and Brandt was burned and blinded — but he carried his infant daughter out of the fire and reached the Temple of the Priests of Pama.

The priests raised the girl and, in a separate corner of the same temple, taught Brandt to function without eyes, honing replacement senses that bordered on the psychic. He eventually drifted away, resurfaced in Honolulu under an alias, and took a seat in Cornelius van Lunt’s Zodiac Cartel as Libra — the one member preaching cosmic balance while the rest plotted robberies. He had no idea what had become of his daughter.

Recognition changed sides mid-crime. During Zodiac’s offensive in Avengers Vol. 1 #122–123 (1974), Libra realized the Avengers’ martial artist was his lost child, freed the captured heroes, and turned on the Cartel that employed him. When Mantis tore away his mask and found empty sockets where his eyes should be, her denial collapsed on the spot — the eyeless crime lord then walked her through the childhood the priests had hidden from them both.

Why It's Obscure

Her father was hiding inside the villain roster the whole time — behind a mask with nothing behind the eyeholes.

Hue, Vietnam
A hunted cradle — Mantis started life as a fugitive: her uncle Khruul hunted the Brandt family for ten months before the attack that killed her mother and took her father’s sight.
The temple years
Parallel lives — the Priests of Pama trained father and daughter under the same roof without ever letting them meet; he followed her progress from hiding and was forbidden to speak a word to her.
Libra of Zodiac
The balance seat — Brandt joined the Zodiac Cartel under Cornelius van Lunt and preached its philosophy of equilibrium, which made his habit of quietly aiding the Avengers baffling to his fellow criminals.
Avengers #123
Mid-saga detonation — Steve Englehart’s 1974 reveal landed in the middle of the Celestial Madonna storyline, handing Mantis a living father weeks before Kang and Immortus began fighting over her destiny.
