Today's Fact
Checked against independent sources — the issues are cited below.
Mantis debuted in Avengers Vol. 1 #112 (1973) as a martial artist, not a powerhouse: the Priests of Pama who raised her taught a fighting discipline built entirely around nerve endings and pressure points. Marvel's own reference entries are blunt about the result — by striking exactly the right spot, Mantis can stun or knock out a being as powerful as Thor, even though she herself has no superhuman strength whatsoever.
The trick is perception, not force. Her training and empathic senses let her instinctively read the weak points in an opponent's body the way other fighters read a stance, so a precisely placed chop does the work a thunder god's hammer blow would do by brute mass. The same skill set let her defeat Karnak of the Inhumans, a fighter who literally makes a career out of finding flaws in things.
It is the sharpest mismatch in the Avengers' record books: a heroine whose file lists no enhanced strength at all owns a documented knockout technique against the strongest Avenger on the roster. Her distinctive antennae, visible in the gallery below, mark the senses that make the strike possible — she does not overpower a god, she locates the one nerve where a god can be switched off.
Why It's Obscure
Every other Avenger who ever dropped Thor brought a weapon, a spell or a serum. She brought a fingertip and a map of his nervous system.
