Most heroes who break come back in one piece. Mantis came back in several. After giving up her son to the Priests of Pama and riding with the Silver Surfer against the Elders of the Universe, she was caught in a cosmic blast — accounts of the era describe the Soul Gem's energies finishing what years of strain had started — and her psyche did not merely crack. It fragmented into multiple physical women, each carrying one slice of her personality and only scraps of her memory.
The fragments lived genuinely separate lives. One washed up on Earth powerless and amnesiac, clawed her memories back with the West Coast Avengers, and fought at their side. Others drifted through the orbits of the Fantastic Four and the Surfer himself. Chroniclers eventually catalogued five distinct forms, known by blunt little titles: the Freak, the Mother, the Woman, the Adept, and the Avenger.
What forced the reunion was a murderer. Thanos had heard a prophecy about a new Celestial Messiah and decided to erase the mother before the problem grew; he hunted the fragments down and killed them one by one. Each death, perversely, returned that aspect to the whole — the Titan's cleanup reassembled the very woman he wanted gone. The merging is laid out across Avengers: Celestial Quest #1–8 (2001), where a restored Mantis sets out to shield her son Sequoia from the Titan who had just, accidentally, put her back together.
Why It's Obscure
One Avenger, five lives running in parallel, and a Titan tidying up the pieces.
