Today's Fact

Partnerships with ancient dragons carry the usual risks: fire, betrayal, and discovering your silent partner has been running the longer con.

THE MANDARIN SEIZED A THIRD OF CHINA RIDING FIN FANG FOOM — THEN TURNED ON THE DRAGONS AND DESTROYED HIS OWN ALLIES!
The Featured Fact

In the Dragon Seed saga (Iron Man Vol. 1 #270–275, 1991), the elderly mentor Chen Hsu steered the Mandarin to the waking of Fin Fang Foom, the Makluan dragon sleeping in the Valley of the Sleeping Dragon. With a living siege engine at his side, the Mandarin did what decades of scheming never managed: he seized control of roughly one-third of China.

Then the fine print surfaced. Chen Hsu was no loyal retainer — he was the disguised captain of the very Makluan starship whose engines the Mandarin wore as rings, and Foom's people had not come to serve a human warlord. The dragons meant to reclaim their vessel's technology and resume the conquest of Earth they had begun millennia earlier, with the Mandarin as a useful, disposable key.

Faced with trading one conquest for a worse one wearing his own face, the Mandarin switched sides mid-catastrophe. Fighting alongside Tony Stark and James Rhodes — both armored — he turned his rings on the Makluans themselves, and the alliance of enemies seemingly destroyed the dragon invaders, Foom included.

Why It's Obscure

For one storyline, the most dangerous man in China and the hero he tormented needed each other more than they needed the dragons gone quietly.

Chen Hsu
The mentor was the captain — Hsu had even stolen and replaced one of the Mandarin's rings years earlier, keeping a thread tied to the villain's mind and memory until the moment came to pull it.
One-third of China
His greatest territorial win — measured purely in ground held, the Foom alliance outperformed every solo scheme in the Mandarin's career, which is exactly why its price tag went unexamined.
1991
Byrne and Romita Jr.'s dragon audit — the saga finally fused the Mandarin's rings, the Makluan ship and Fin Fang Foom into a single origin, three decades after each debuted separately.
Foom
Still a child, by dragon standards — reference notes on the Makluans point out that the mountain-sized Foom was young for his kind; the invasion's heavy was effectively its cadet.
