MAGNETO

Today's Fact

Erik Lehnsherr has been beaten by heroes, armies and his own children. Nobody on that list expected the decisive defeat to come from his own lab work, aged about six months.

MAGNETO BUILT THE ULTIMATE MUTANT — AND ALPHA'S FIRST ACT OF JUDGMENT WAS TURNING HIS MAKER INTO A BABY!
The Featured Fact

Rebuilding his Brotherhood in The Defenders Vol. 1 #15–16 (1974), Magneto went shopping in deep places: using ancient alien technology recovered near the Earth's core, he grew himself a trump card and named it, without a trace of humility, Alpha the Ultimate Mutant.

Alpha began as a hulking, grunting giant, but every use of his enormous power evolved him further — features smoothing, brain swelling, understanding catching up with strength. Set loose against the Defenders, he lifted the United Nations building as a hostage and rearranged the heroes with casual reality-warping, then paused to actually read the minds in the room.

What Alpha found in Professor X's and Doctor Strange's thoughts changed the verdict. Judging his creator unworthy, Alpha reduced Magneto and the Brotherhood — Mastermind, Blob, Lorelei and Unus included — to infancy, set the UN building gently back down, wiped the witnesses' memories and departed for the stars to finish growing up.

Why It's Obscure

The Master of Magnetism spent the next stretch of continuity in a nursery on Muir Island, which reframes rather a lot of his later menace.

Muir Island
A nursery for a nemesis — baby Erik was placed in the care of Moira MacTaggert, who quietly tinkered with his DNA while he was small, hoping to sand down the flaws that made his powers eat his sanity.
Re-aged
Restored, but younger — the Shi'ar agent Erik the Red eventually returned Magneto to adulthood, deliberately landing him in his physical prime — the in-story reason a Holocaust survivor kept looking forty years too young.
1974
A Defenders story, not an X-Men one — the whole humiliation played out in the Defenders' book, against Hulk, Doctor Strange and company, which is partly why so many X-Men readers never meet it.
Alpha
The weapon outgrew the war — Alpha's evolution took minutes, not millennia; the smarter the creation became, the less interested it was in conquering anything for anyone.
