Today's Fact

The Brotherhood's founding lineup had a fifth chair, and its occupant walked out before the team ever threw a punch.

MAGNETO'S FIRST RECRUIT QUIT BEFORE THE BROTHERHOOD EVER FOUGHT THE X-MEN — THEN CLONED HIM OUT OF SPITE!
The Featured Fact

When Magneto set out to gather mutants for his cause, the very first recruit he signed was a woman known only as Astra. Her gift was interplanetary teleportation, and she put it to work as his personal procurement department, hopping across the galaxy to stockpile alien technology for the war he was planning against humanity.

Astra never appeared in the Brotherhood's debut. By the time the team faced the X-Men in X-Men Vol. 1 #4 (1964), she was already gone — accounts differ on whether she resigned over Magneto's treatment of her or was expelled for disrespect, but every version agrees the split happened before the first public mission, which is why a founding member sat out the most famous first appearance in mutant history.

Walking away did not cure her fascination with him. Astra spent years tracking her old leader, and when Professor X left Magneto comatose, she recovered his body, restored his health, and built herself a replacement: a younger, stronger clone grown from his cells. That clone escaped her control, took the name Joseph, and joined the X-Men — the revelation of Astra's role arrived in X-Men Vol. 2 #86 (1999), thirty-five years after the debut she missed.

Why It's Obscure

Mastermind, Toad and the twins get the trading cards. The woman who fetched the arsenal gets a footnote and a grudge.

Recruit #1
First in, first out — Astra joined Magneto's cause before Toad, Mastermind, Quicksilver or the Scarlet Witch, and left before any of them saw combat under his banner.
The galaxy
A one-woman supply line — Her interplanetary teleportation filled Magneto's caches with off-world machinery, only a fraction of which he ever bothered to use.
1999
A retcon with receipts — Astra herself did not appear until Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #366 (1999), when the Magneto War storyline finally gave the missing founder a face.
Joseph
Revenge, home-grown — Unable to have the original on her terms, Astra manufactured a younger Magneto with fewer limits — and lost control of him almost immediately.
