MAGNETO JOINED THE HELLFIRE CLUB HE ONCE FOUGHT — SHARING THE WHITE KING'S CHAIR WITH STORM!
The Featured Fact

In Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #210 (1986), the Hellfire Club made an offer nobody in 1980 would have believed: the Inner Circle seat of White King, extended to Magneto — the same Magneto whose Brotherhood the Club's allies had battled for years. The offer followed a rare team-up, when X-Men and Hellfire Club fighters stood on the same side against the mutant-hunting Sentinel Nimrod and paid for the victory with the lives of Harry Leland and Friedrich von Roehm.

Magneto did not rush to accept. He weighed the chair while running Xavier's school, and the question split his own house: in New Mutants Vol. 1 #51 (1987), he and Storm debated whether taking the seat would protect the school or corrupt it. Their answer was a compromise with no precedent in the Club's chess-set hierarchy — they took the White King position jointly, two rulers sharing a single square.

By Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #219 (1987) the arrangement was simply a fact of life: when Havok came looking for the missing X-Men, he found Magneto holding court at the Hellfire Club and was told, by Emma Frost herself, that Magneto was the Club's new White King. Marvel's own history of the Club adds the stranger coda — Magneto later became its Grey King, after holding both the White and Black titles at once.

Why It's Obscure

The terrorist and the weather goddess did not split a crown. They split a chess piece, inside the clubhouse of their old enemies.

1986
An enemy's invitation — After the joint fight against Nimrod in Uncanny X-Men #209–210, the Hellfire Club offers Magneto the vacant White King chair.
The truce
Born in a graveyard — The alliance only exists because Leland and von Roehm died fighting beside the X-Men; the Club needed new strength and the X-Men needed fewer enemies.
1987
Two kings, one seat — In New Mutants #51, Magneto and Storm settle the debate by taking the White King title together, as co-leaders of the X-Men and the school.
#219
Havok finds out last — Havok storms the Club hunting for answers in Uncanny X-Men #219 and learns from Emma Frost that Magneto now sits as White King.
