Today's Fact
Verified against independent sources. Issues cited below.
From his island citadel, Magneto issued the boldest ultimatum of his career: every nation on Earth would dismantle its arsenals and accept mutant rule, or face destruction. The Soviet Union answered with the nuclear submarine Leningrad, which fired its missiles at his island — and watched him swat them out of the sky without leaving his chair.
His reply was annihilation. A hologram of Magneto appeared on the Leningrad's bridge to deliver the sentence in person, then his power shorted the boat's systems and dragged her down until the sea crushed her hull, killing her entire crew of more than 150 sailors. For emphasis he raised a volcano beneath the Siberian town of Varykino — though there, pointedly, he slowed the eruption so every citizen could escape.
Then the X-Men broke his machine, and in the melee Magneto struck down Kitty Pryde and believed he had killed her — a Jewish teenager, a child, cut down by his own hand. The horror of it stopped him where no army could: he saw the persecutor he had become, abandoned his conquest on the spot, and vanished. Kitty, phasing at the instant of the blow, had survived.
Why It's Obscure
A submarine crew paid for his ultimatum. A single teenager's face collected the debt and ended the war.
