Today's Fact

When Asteroid M came down, it nearly took its master with it. The techno-organic alien Warlock had smashed through the station on his way to Earth, and Magneto rode the wreckage into the Atlantic, gravely injured and helpless in shark-patrolled water. The most feared mutant alive was about to become lunch.
His rescuer was Lee Forrester, captain of the fishing trawler Arcadia, in Uncanny X-Men #188 (1984). Lee shot at the sharks, dove in herself, kicked a great white in the nose and hauled the unconscious man aboard — then recognised the face under the chainmail. She had met Magneto before, as an enemy, back when she was dating Cyclops. She saved him anyway.
Lee nursed him back to health on his Bermuda Triangle island, and the convalescence changed him. Magneto, who had sneered at help from a mere human, apologised — genuinely — and the two became lovers, detailed across New Mutants #23–24. Writers and reference guides alike credit those quiet weeks with Lee for softening Magneto toward the gentler path that soon led him to surrender for trial and take over Xavier's school. They parted only when that new duty called him away.
Why It's Obscure
