For four and a half decades, readers called him Erik Lehnsherr and assumed the matter was settled. It was not. X-Men: Magneto Testament #1 (2008) finally opened the family register: the boy who would shake the world's magnetic field was born Max Eisenhardt, son of Jakob Eisenhardt, a decorated Jewish veteran of the First World War, in a middle-class German home of the late 1920s. Erik Lehnsherr was never his name at all — it was a cover identity taken up after the war, built on forged papers so a hunted man could disappear.
The delay was not a printing accident. Across his first decades in print, Magneto carried almost no confirmed biography at all: a codename, a helmet, and a cause. Writers later supplied the alias Magnus, then the fuller Lehnsherr identity in the early 1990s, and fans spent years arguing about whether that name even fit the survivor's history Marvel was slowly assembling around him. Only when Greg Pak built a five-issue account researched from real Holocaust testimony did the character receive a birth name worthy of the record.
Even the borrowed names tell his story in miniature. He answered to Max as a schoolboy who once hurled a javelin farther than physics allowed, to Magnus as a young widower starting over abroad, and to Erik Lehnsherr while walking into the friendships and feuds that would define mutant history. Each identity was armor for a different decade. Underneath all of them sits one Nuremberg-era schoolboy whose surname — Eisenhardt, roughly “iron-hard” — Marvel waited forty-five years to print.
Why It's Obscure
Four names, one survivor — and the real one stayed unpublished until 2008.
