MAGNETO'S FIRST CHILD WASN'T A MUTANT AT ALL — AND KRAKOA COULD NEVER BRING HER BACK!
The Featured Fact

Before Wanda, before Pietro, before Lorna, there was Anya. After escaping Auschwitz with Magda, the young man who would become Magneto married her, settled in a Carpathian village, and welcomed a daughter. The family later moved to Vinnitsa in Soviet Ukraine, where Erik took day work and tried, for once, to live as an ordinary husband and father. The full account was not told until Classic X-Men #12 (1987), in the backup story “A Fire in the Night!”

Cheated of his pay, Erik lashed out with a levitated crowbar — his powers surfacing in anger — and hurried home to find the inn ablaze. He pulled Magda clear, but local police, egged on by the cheating foreman, beat and held him while Anya burned in an upstairs room and fell from the window dead. Grief detonated his gift: Erik killed the mob around him in a single magnetic outburst. Magda, horrified, fled into the night calling him a monster — pregnant, though neither of them yet understood what that meant for history, with the twins who would become Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.

The cruel coda arrived decades later on Krakoa. When the Scarlet Witch created the Waiting Room, even mutants who died before their powers emerged could finally be resurrected — and Magneto hoped Anya might at last be among them. She was not. Anya, the first child of the Master of Magnetism, was human all along, with no X-gene to back up and no resurrection protocol that could reach her. The one loss his revolution was built on is the one loss mutantkind's greatest miracle could not undo.

Why It's Obscure

Wanda, Pietro and Lorna dominate the family tree. The daughter who started the tragedy is the one almost every summary leaves in the fire.

1987
Classic X-Men #12 — Chris Claremont and John Bolton's “A Fire in the Night!” finally gives Anya a name, a home, and the night that ended Magneto's one attempt at an ordinary life.
Vinnitsa
The inn fire — Erik saved Magda with his emerging powers, then was restrained by police while Anya died upstairs. Every later doctrine he preached can be traced back to being held down in that street.
Magda
The flight — Magda ran from the carnage, not from the fire. She later reached Wundagore, gave birth to twins, and vanished into a blizzard — leaving Erik to bury Anya alone.
Human
The Krakoa verdict — Anya Eisenhardt's Marvel Wiki entry records the final twist: Magneto hoped the Waiting Room could resurrect her, but she proved to be human and therefore beyond the protocols.
Echo
The Paris coda — the same Classic X-Men story ends in the present day, with Magneto rescuing a mother and child from a burning building and pointedly telling them to spread word of who saved them.
