Today's Fact

BEFORE THEY WERE ENEMIES, MAGNETO AND XAVIER WERE CO-WORKERS WHO FOUGHT HYDRA TOGETHER — AND MAGNETO KEPT THE NAZI GOLD!
The Featured Fact

The most famous friendship-turned-rivalry in comics did not begin with a chess game or a battlefield. It began with a day job. In the flashback in Uncanny X-Men #161 (September 1982), a young Charles Xavier travels to Haifa, Israel, to help at a psychiatric hospital for Holocaust survivors — where a young man calling himself Magnus is already working as an orderly. Magnus is Magneto: a survivor himself, camp tattoo on his forearm, searching for his missing wife Magda and trying to build a quiet life.

The two men bonded over weeks of work and long debates about the coming age of mutants, and together they helped patient Gabrielle Haller, a Dachau survivor trapped in catatonia, come back to herself. Then HYDRA attacked: Baron von Strucker wanted Haller because the Nazis had hidden the location of a hoard of Hitler's gold inside her shattered mind. Xavier and Magnus fought side by side — the first, forgotten superhero team-up of Professor X and Magneto.

And here is where the friendship cracked. Magnus carried Xavier and Haller to safety, then went back into the collapsing cave and took the gold for himself — seed money, he said, for the war he now believed was coming for mutantkind. Xavier begged him not to let vengeance rule him. Magnus left anyway. The Master of Magnetism's war chest was Nazi gold, taken in the same hour he saved his best friend's life.

Why It's Obscure

Everyone knows they were friends first. Almost nobody remembers the hospital, the patient, or who walked out of the cave richer.

1982
Uncanny X-Men #161 — Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum's "Gold Rush!" tells the whole first meeting as a flashback inside the mind of a dying Xavier, twenty years after it happened.
Haifa
The orderly — Magnus worked under Dr. Daniel Shomron caring for Holocaust survivors. The future Master of Magnetism's job, when Xavier met him, was literally tending the wounded.
Gabby
Gabrielle Haller — the patient Xavier pulled out of catatonia later became Israel's ambassador and the mother of David Haller, the mutant known as Legion. The gold's location had been conditioned into her mind at Dachau.
The split
The gold — Strucker is buried in the cave-in, Xavier and Haller are saved — and Magnus keeps the bullion to fund his cause. Their entire fifty-year argument starts here: not over whether to fight, but over what fighting is allowed to cost.
Alias
A borrowed name — "Erik Magnus Lehnsherr" was itself a forgery, created for Max Eisenhardt by master forger Georg Odekirk during the hunt for Magda — a fake identity so good it served him for decades.
