The Master of Magnetism's most famous accessory is a helmet that keeps telepaths out. Which makes his fourth-ever appearance deeply strange: in X-Men #4 (March 1964), Magneto doesn't block a psychic — he becomes one. Leaving his body behind, Magneto astral-projects onto the mental plane to confront Charles Xavier directly. Xavier refuses to reveal where he's hiding, but concedes the venue: the two of them can meet on a mental plane — as psychic equals.
Two issues later, in X-Men #6 (July 1964), he does it again, projecting his mind out of his body to hunt for the Sub-Mariner. This time Stan Lee's own narration box removes all doubt about what readers were seeing: Magneto's "brain power is second only to that of Professor X." Across those early issues the latent gift kept leaking out — probing minds, reading dreams, issuing telepathic commands — because Lee's earliest mutant stories treated powerful mutants as psychics almost by default.
Then the power simply evaporated. Later writers quietly retconned Magneto's telepathy out of existence, rebuilding him as a pure master of magnetism whose mind was protected by willpower, electromagnetic static, and eventually that famous helmet. The one modern revival came from John Byrne, whose X-Men: The Hidden Years (1999–2001) has Magneto astral-project to overawe a superstitious Savage Land tribe and even restrain Jean Grey's telepathic powers. Byrne appears to be the last writer to remember that the man in the anti-telepathy helmet started out as the world's number-two telepath.
Why It's Obscure
Everyone knows the helmet. Almost nobody knows it guards a mind that once went toe-to-toe with Xavier's — from the inside.

- Magneto Has a Forgotten Psychic Power — Screen RantAstral projection debuted in X-Men #4 (1964) against Xavier and recurred in #6's hunt for the Sub-Mariner, where Lee's text box rates Magneto's brain power second only to Professor X; Byrne's Hidden Years is the last revival.
- Magneto (Marvel Comics) — WikipediaIn his earliest appearances Magneto was depicted as capable of astral projection, and has on rare occasions read dreams, issued telepathic commands, and probed minds; latent telepathic powers remain one of the standing explanations for his resistance to telepathy.
