Today's Fact

In 1995's Uncanny X-Men #327, a younger, silver-haired, amnesiac man with Magneto's powers fell out of the sky — and the X-Men believed he WAS Magneto, restored from the wreckage of his orbital base Avalon. He called himself Joseph. Four years later, in 1999's "Magneto War" (X-Men #86), the truth came out: Joseph was a clone, secretly grown by Astra — Magneto's vengeful former Brotherhood recruit — built for one purpose: to kill the original Magneto.
Astra — Beth Al-Reraph, a mutant teleporter and one of Magneto's earliest Brotherhood recruits — nursed a grudge for decades. After Professor X mind-wiped Magneto and left him comatose, she revived him, harvested his DNA, and grew a younger, stronger copy. Her plan: the clone would destroy the Master of Magnetism. Her mistake: in building him, she removed the clone's "self-preservation limitations" — power without a ceiling — and instead of killing, he lost his memory and joined the X-Men.
The payoff came when Magneto seized control of Earth's electromagnetic field and threatened to wreck it unless the world gave him a mutant homeland. Astra unleashed Joseph on him. Joseph won the duel — and then burned himself out repairing the magnetosphere damage Magneto had caused, dying in the process. Magneto got Genosha anyway. The clone gave his life cleaning up his template's mess.
Why It's Obscure
Everyone knows Magneto's children — Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Polaris. Almost nobody remembers that he had a son by cloning who wasn't really his son at all, that the clone briefly dated Rogue, and that his death saved the planet while Magneto collected the reward. The 1990s clone era produced a lot of forgotten lore; Joseph is its most tragic entry.
