In only his second appearance, Magneto conquered an entire country!
The Featured Fact

X-Men #4 (1964), "The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants!" by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby — Magneto's second appearance ever. Fresh off his solo debut, he unveils his new team — Quicksilver, the Scarlet Witch, Toad, and Mastermind — and their very first act together is to conquer the tiny South American republic of Santo Marco.

The playbook: steal a freighter, shell the hills behind the little nation, and let Mastermind's illusions conjure a phantom army so vast the government surrenders without a real fight. A bloodless coup. Borders sealed. Just like that, the Master of Magnetism is a head of state.

It doesn't last the week. The X-Men invade in their civilian identities, the Brotherhood's stronghold falls — and Magneto's exit strategy is to wire a nuclear bomb "capable of blowing up this entire nation" rather than lose it. Xavier hurls himself at a booby-trapped door to save his students, pretends to lose his mental powers as a final test, and the Brotherhood flees. Santo Marco: conquered and liberated inside 22 pages.

Why It's Obscure

Everyone remembers Asteroid M, Avalon, and Genosha — Magneto's famous seats of power. Almost nobody remembers that his first territorial conquest happened in his SECOND comic ever, and that the country is basically never mentioned again in sixty years of Marvel comics. The country-takeover plot is the forgotten B-story of one of the most important debuts in X-Men history.

1963
X-Men #1 — Magneto debuts solo, seizing a Cape Citadel missile base. No team, no country, no plan beyond "mutants rule." Stan Lee & Jack Kirby.
1964
X-Men #4 — "The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants!" The first appearance of Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Toad, and Mastermind — four characters who would define Marvel history — and the conquest of Santo Marco, all in one issue.
1964
The takeover — A stolen freighter, naval shells on the hills, and Mastermind's phantom army. The government of Santo Marco surrenders to an invasion force that mostly doesn't exist. Bloodless coup; borders closed.
1964
The fall — The X-Men take the country back the same week. Magneto rigs the nuclear bomb; Xavier's fake power-loss gambit; the Brotherhood scatters. Santo Marco vanishes from Marvel continuity almost entirely.
Trivia
The X-Men #4 cover goof: Scarlet Witch wears a bright green costume on the cover — but her classic red inside the issue. Kirby's cover and the interior just... disagreed, and it became a beloved Silver Age quirk.
