Today's Fact
For a few years around the turn of the millennium, the sorceress answering to Magik, carrying the Soulsword and ruling Limbo, was not Illyana Rasputina at all.
After Illyana Rasputina's death, her Soulsword passed from hand to hand until it reached Amanda Sefton — born Jimaine Szardos, a circus-raised sorceress and Nightcrawler's foster sister — who claimed the blade following her clash with the necromancer Gravemoss and, with it, a claim on Limbo itself.
Amanda did not merely borrow the weapon. She took the name Magik as a deliberate piece of magical camouflage, calculating that demons and rival sorcerers aiming spells at Limbo's famous queen would waste them on the wrong woman — or hesitate, which in Limbo amounts to the same thing.
From that throne she did the job in earnest: she helped the X-Men turn back an invasion of Earth by the demonic N'garai, and she brokered a summit of the rulers of the various Hell dimensions to keep all their realms from being destroyed, before Belasco eventually clawed Limbo back for himself.
Why It's Obscure
Illyana eventually returned, as Rasputinas tend to, but the record books still carry a second, fully credentialed Magik in between.
