Today's Fact
Most swords obey one rule above all others: pointy end goes in the other person. Illyana Rasputina forged one that pointedly refuses.
Forged in Limbo from a piece of her own soul, the Soulsword is not really a blade for cutting bodies at all. Reference histories of the weapon agree on its strange rule: it disrupts magical spells, enchantments and supernatural beings, often permanently, yet under normal circumstances it passes through ordinary, non-magical people and objects without injuring them at all.
A swing that would unmake a demon simply ghosts through a bystander, and striking someone who is possessed or magically controlled tends to break the spell rather than wound the victim. The sword is a scalpel aimed at magic itself, which makes its wielder terrifying to sorcerers and oddly safe to stand next to in a crowd.
There is exactly one standing exception, and it is her best friend. Kitty Pryde is the only non-magical person the Soulsword can physically injure — even while Kitty is phased and intangible, when almost nothing else in the universe can touch her. Reference accounts tie the exception to the deep bond the two formed in Limbo, which made Kitty a living receptacle for Illyana's magic.
Why It's Obscure
A weapon that spares everyone in the room except the one person phasing through the wall deserves a closer look.
