Today's Fact
Her protection is metered by her corruption: the stronger the spell she reaches for, the more of her the metal covers.
Every time Illyana Rasputina summoned her Soulsword on Earth, the blade brought company. A sheath of silver eldritch armor would plate itself over her left shoulder, chest and arm — never the whole body at first, and never by her conscious choice. The armor is keyed to her sorcery rather than her mutant gift: the more magical power she draws on, the more of her it covers, plate by plate.
The plating is working equipment, not decoration. It turns aside physical and magical attacks alike, and it lends her outright strength — enough, on one occasion, to seize the giant demon S'ym and throw him several feet. But its growth chart doubles as a warning light, because the armor spreads in step with the demonic features of the Darkchilde: more coverage means Limbo is winning more of her.
The armor's finest hour came during Inferno, when S'ym — empowered and holding her own Soulsword — moved to decapitate her. Her eldritch armor surged to meet the blow and covered her in time, a reflex detailed across New Mutants Vol. 1 #71–73 (1988–89). And when Illyana finally renounced the darkness and purged herself from the timeline, what her friends found on the ground was that same armor, scorched and hollow — with a seven-year-old Illyana curled inside it, given back her childhood by the very shell that had measured her fall.
Why It's Obscure
A suit of armor that files a progress report on its wearer's soul is a uniquely Limbo kind of safety feature.

The eldritch armor is plainly visible in every frame: the spiked black plating swallows her left arm and shoulder as the Soulsword comes up.
