Today's Fact

Death was not the end of Illyana Rasputina. It was not even the strangest part of her return — the missing soul was.

BELASCO RESURRECTED MAGIK WITHOUT HER SOUL — AND THE SOULLESS DARKCHYLDE CAME BACK FURIOUS AT HIM FOR IT!
The Featured Fact

Years after the child Illyana died of the Legacy Virus, Belasco went looking for the girl who had beaten him. Having retaken Limbo from Amanda Sefton, he used a bloodstone holding a fragment of Illyana's soul to resurrect her — and got only part of the order. What rose was the Darkchylde: Illyana's teenage form and all of her memories, but no soul inside them, because the rest of her soul was never his to summon.

Belasco judged the result a failure and cast her out of Limbo. The rejection defined the arc that followed, New X-Men Vol. 2 #37–41 (2007) — the 'Quest for Magik' by Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost — in which the soulless Darkchylde fights toward one goal: vengeance on Belasco for resurrecting her without her soul and discarding her for the lack of it.

To rebuild what she was missing, Illyana reached for someone else's soul. She took the young mutant Pixie as a makeshift apprentice and carved a portion of Pixie's soul toward a new bloodstone and a new Soulsword — an act the story frames as proof of the damage: a Magik with her soul intact would have hesitated. The Magik who eventually rejoined the X-Men carried that soulless stretch with her, and spent years of stories earning the missing pieces back.

Why It's Obscure

Resurrections are routine in the X-Men's world; a resurrection deliberately shipped incomplete, and angry about the workmanship, is not.

The ingredient
One bloodstone's worth — Belasco could only work with the soul-fragment already set in his amulet, so the woman he raised had Illyana's memories and shape but an empty space where the rest of her should be.
The quality control
Rejected by her maker — Finding his creation soulless, Belasco banished her from Limbo — the second time that realm threw Illyana Rasputina out and expected her to stay gone.
The substitute
Pixie's price — Darkchylde's attempt to forge a replacement bloodstone and Soulsword out of Pixie's soul left Pixie permanently changed too — the soulless years billed a second victim.
The long repair
Soul, in instalments — Recovering her bloodstones and her full self became the engine of X-Infernus and the runs that followed; today's gallery page shows the Darkchylde enthroned in Limbo's castle mid-repair.
