Today's Fact
Most sorcerers find a teacher and wait to be taught; Illyana Rasputina picked her decade first, then knocked on the Sanctum door.
During Brian Michael Bendis' Uncanny X-Men run, Magik's powers destabilised after she absorbed the whole of Limbo into herself — her stepping discs began slipping through time as well as space, and her magic outgrew every teacher alive in the present. Her solution was characteristic: she travelled back in time and took lessons from a younger Doctor Strange, studying under the Sorcerer Supreme in his prime rather than the battle-worn version of her own day.
The apprenticeship was no ceremonial cameo. When the crisis over the omega-level mutant Matthew Malloy peaked in Uncanny X-Men Vol. 3, Illyana again went back to consult Strange, and he showed her how to use the Eye of Agamotto — one of the most guarded artefacts in his keeping — so she could look inside Malloy and judge what kind of person he truly was.
The arrangement stuck. Marvel's own guide to the Strange Academy faculty lists her time-travel training plainly: she learned from Strange in his prime, and the lessons sharpened her without softening a single edge. The girl who had been tutored by a demon in Limbo ended up completing her education with the greatest sorcerer on Earth — she just had to commute across decades to attend class.
Why It's Obscure
Her Limbo schooling gets retold constantly; the second, stranger education she arranged for herself is usually skipped in one line.
