Today's Fact
Verified against independent sources. Issues cited below.
Most teleporters cut a straight line. Magik cannot. Her stepping discs are a phenomenon native to Limbo itself, and whenever Illyana Rasputina calls one, she must use that demon dimension as a midway point — stepping out of the world, across Otherplace, and back in again at her destination, whether that destination is the next room or another continent.
The discs answer to more than geography. They open between points in time as readily as points in space, which made young Illyana the most dangerous traveller on the New Mutants' roster: meaning to cross a city, she could surface days, years or centuries adrift, and early on she did exactly that, arriving in pasts and futures entirely by accident.
Distance makes it worse. The farther a jump reaches, the weaker her grip on where — and when — it lands, and a trip through time leaves her psychically drained, needing to recover before she can disc again. Doctor Strange himself told her the discs carried the potential for manipulating time on a far wider scale: her humble teleport is, on paper, a time machine with a hell for a hallway.
Why It's Obscure
Other heroes teleport. Illyana commutes through a demon dimension and occasionally misses her century.
