MAGIK'S SOULSWORD CAN'T CUT ORDINARY PEOPLE AT ALL — IT SLIDES THROUGH HUMAN FLESH HARMLESSLY AND SAVES ITS EDGE FOR MAGIC ALONE!
The Featured Fact

Every new reader asks the same question the first time Magik swings her blazing Soulsword through a crowd: why is nobody bleeding? The answer is the sword's oldest and strangest rule. Forged from Illyana Rasputina's own soul in Magik Vol. 1 #4 (1984), the blade is not really a physical weapon at all — it only wounds what is magical.

Against demons, enchantments and sorcerers, the Soulsword is devastating: it severs spells, breaks mystical bonds and cuts supernatural beings down. Against an ordinary human being, it passes straight through the body and leaves the skin unmarked, because there is nothing in plain flesh for its edge to bite on. Illyana can duel a demon lord and then wave the same blade through a bystander as a party trick.

There is one famous, painful exception. The sword can strike intangible and ethereal beings — and Kitty Pryde, whose phasing power makes her exactly that, learned the hard way that she is the one non-magical person the Soulsword can genuinely hurt. Later years, as Illyana's power grew, the blade grew with her and took on a far more physical edge — but for most of her history, the deadliest sword in the X-Men's armoury was harmless to almost everyone.

Why It's Obscure

A weapon with a conscience built into the metal — lethal to hell itself, useless against a mugger.

Rule
Magic only — the classic Soulsword disrupts spells and injures magical creatures, while non-magical beings and objects are left unharmed.
Forge
Made of a soul — Illyana created the blade from her own life force in Limbo, which is why its nature mirrors hers: aimed at corruption, not flesh.
Breaker
Its real job — striking someone possessed, enchanted or magically transformed can counter or break the spell controlling them.
Kitty
The one exception — Kitty Pryde's intangibility puts her in the sword's reach; she has felt its sting despite having no magic of her own.
1984
The origin — the Soulsword's creation closes the Magik limited series (1983–84), with its selective harm shown throughout the New Mutants years.
