The Featured Fact

Illyana Rasputin's corruption was never just a mood — it had a body. When the dark half of her soul takes over, Magik transforms into the Darkchilde: curved horns sprout from her head, a long barbed tail lashes behind her, her legs bend into goat-like limbs ending in hooves, and her skin hardens into a red, scaled hide.

The form surfaced in pieces first. Every time Illyana wielded the Soulsword, a plate of mystical Eldritch armor appeared on her sword arm — and it kept spreading, adventure by adventure, as if her corruption were keeping score. By the late 1980s the horns and tail joined the armor whenever her power peaked.

The full takeover arrived in New Mutants #71 (1988), when the demon N'astirh coaxed Magik into embracing her dark side completely. Transformed, she threw open Limbo's gates and unleashed the Inferno invasion of New York. Her escape from that shape cost her everything: in New Mutants #73, she used the Soulsword and her stepping discs to drag the demons home and purge her Limbo past — leaving behind an empty suit of armor and a de-aged six-year-old Illyana inside it.

Why It's Obscure

Armor

The warning sign — Illyana's Eldritch armor starts at one shoulder and spreads with every Soulsword use, charting her corruption in metal.

The takeover — New Mutants #71: N'astirh's urging tips Magik fully into the Darkchilde and opens the road to Inferno.

The price — New Mutants #73: ending the invasion means surrendering her teenage self, leaving a child Illyana inside the discarded armor.
