Today's Fact
Between the marriage and the Goblin Queen, Madelyne held the strangest day job on the X-Men's roster — sysadmin to a haunted supercomputer.
When the X-Men faked their deaths and relocated to a captured Reavers base in the Australian Outback, the team's survival depended on alien-grade hardware nobody understood — nobody except Madelyne Pryor. Through the Outback era, including Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #230 (1988), the powerless pilot became the team's technical advisor, because she was mysteriously the only person who could fully operate the Reavers' advanced computer array.
It was a strange promotion for a charter pilot from Anchorage, and the books leaned into the strangeness. Madelyne ran the base's surveillance and communications from the eerie computer room the other X-Men found unsettling, monitored the world's news feeds for the secretly-alive team, and even sketched the eight-pointed star she proposed as the hidden team's insignia.
The job is also where her story turns. Alone on monitor duty, Madelyne intercepted a broadcast showing Scott Summers alive beside a resurrected Jean Grey — proof, delivered through her own screens, that her husband had left her for a ghost. She punched the monitor, the feedback knocked her out, and the demon S'ym slipped into her unconscious mind with an offer of power. The Goblin Queen began at a sysadmin's desk.
Why It's Obscure
The X-Men's secret Australian era ran on one civilian's unexplained fluency in enemy technology.
