Today's Fact
Her resurrection plan was flawless except for one detail: the grave she robbed had already been robbed better.
By 2008 Madelyne Pryor existed only as a psionic ghost, a consciousness with vast power and no body to hold it. Working as the Red Queen, she assembled a new Sisterhood of Mutants — Spiral, Lady Deathstrike, Chimera and the Wyngarde sisters among them — with one real purpose behind the recruitment drive: finding a vessel strong enough to contain her, and only one body in the world fit the specification, the buried corpse of Jean Grey.
The Sisterhood even rehearsed the transfer, retrieving Revanche's corpse and successfully installing Psylocke's life-force in it to prove the ritual worked. Then Madelyne stole a lock of Jean's hair from Wolverine's room to use as a homing talisman, followed it to the grave in Westchester, and began merging herself into the exhumed body while Cyclops begged her to stop — his optic blasts passing straight through her ghostly form without slowing her at all.
What she never knew was that Domino had reached the grave first. Anticipating the plan, the X-Men had the real body removed and an unidentified substitute left in its place, and the moment Madelyne bound herself to the wrong corpse its decayed frame failed under her psionic energy. In Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #511 (2009) she dissipated on the spot, undone not by any weapon aimed at her but by a switch performed hours earlier by a woman whose power is literally being lucky.
Why It's Obscure
She planned for psychics, sorcerers and her ex-husband. She did not plan for the X-Men's luckiest member doing quiet grave work in advance.
