MADELYNE PRYOR CAME BACK AS A PSYCHIC GHOST — NATE GREY DREAMED HER BACK INTO EXISTENCE WITHOUT EVER MEANING TO!
The Featured Fact

Madelyne Pryor died at the climax of Inferno, her essence drawn into Jean Grey. Years later she simply turned up again — amnesiac, powerless and unexplained — in the path of Nate Grey, the teenage refugee from the Age of Apocalypse, in X-Man #5 (1995). Nobody, including Madelyne, could say how a dead woman was walking Switzerland.

Under the tutelage of the Black Queen Selene, the returned Madelyne clawed her way back into power politics as the Hellfire Club's Black Rook, piecing together fragments of her stolen first life. She fought beside Nate, crossed wands with the Great Beasts, and all the while the question hung over her: resurrection, impostor, or something stranger?

The answer, in X-Man #25 (1997), was stranger. Nate had unconsciously built her — a psychic construct spun from his own psionic energy and his homesick memories of his own world's Jean Grey, wrapped around Madelyne's lingering presence on the astral plane. Told to her face that she was an accident of a lonely boy's mind, Madelyne refused to be unmade, hurled his borrowed energy back at him, and walked out insisting on her right to exist.

Why It's Obscure

Inferno killed her once. Loneliness, of all things, brought her back — and she declined to apologise for it.

1995
The return — X-Man #5: an amnesiac Madelyne surfaces in Nate Grey's life with no memory of dying and no explanation for living.
Rook
The Black Rook — coached by Selene, the construct Madelyne takes a Hellfire Club title and rebuilds herself a power base from nothing.
1997
The reveal — X-Man #25 names her true nature: Nate's psionic energy and his memories of another world's Jean, given a dead woman's shape.
Refusal
Not unmade — confronted with her own unreality, Madelyne rejects it outright: a person, she argues, whatever she is made of.
