Long before demons and clones entered her story, Madelyne Pryor got powers the ordinary way in Marvel comics: a god handed them out for his own amusement. In X-Men and Alpha Flight #1–2 (1985), Loki lured a plane full of ordinary people to his enchanted Firefountain and granted each of them a miraculous gift.
Madelyne's gift was healing — total healing. Calling herself Anodyne, she cured the childhood head injury behind Cyclops' uncontrollable optic blasts, letting Scott Summers open his eyes without ruby-quartz lenses for the first time in his adult life. She also steadied Wolverine's berserker rage and eased Aurora's fractured mind. For one brief storyline, the most dangerous thing about Madelyne Pryor was how much good she could do.
The catch was pure Loki: the fountain's power was being drained from magical beings who were dying to supply it, and keeping the gift meant surrendering creativity and imagination. Madelyne and the others rejected it. Loki, ordered to undo his work, spitefully reversed every cure as well — Scott needed his visor again within the issue. Madelyne did keep one souvenir from the adventure, though: it was during the Anodyne affair that she learned she was pregnant with Nathan Summers.
Why It's Obscure
