Today's Fact

Stripped of his powers and stuck in a hotel room, Loki called in a favour from the Norn Queen — and a passing burglar collected it.

LOKI'S STOLEN POWER-UP BUILT THE WRECKER — A BURGLAR IN HIS OWN HELMET TRICKED KARNILLA!
The Featured Fact

Exiled to Earth with his magic stripped by Odin, Loki did what he always does: he schemed for a shortcut. In The Mighty Thor Vol. 1 #148 (1968), by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, he performed a ritual to summon Karnilla, Queen of the Norns, and beg a fresh infusion of Asgardian power with which to crush Thor, whose own strength Odin had also cut down.

The ritual worked. The delivery did not. While Loki waited, a demolition man turned burglar named Dirk Garthwaite — already calling himself the Wrecker after the crowbar he left at every looted, demolished crime scene — broke into the hotel room, knocked the powerless god cold, and idly tried on Loki's horned helmet. When Karnilla materialised, she saw the helmet from behind, assumed she was addressing Loki, and poured the entire enchantment into the wrong man.

Garthwaite walked out with superhuman strength, stamina and bulletproof durability, and promptly dropped a building on Thor, coming closer to killing the thunder god than Loki had managed in years. Loki, meanwhile, woke up on a hotel floor with nothing — his borrowed power spent on a common thief, in what may be the single most avoidable own-goal in Asgardian history.

Why It's Obscure

One helmet, one case of mistaken identity, and a Thor villain was born by accident.

The setup
Powerless on Earth — Odin had stripped every Asgardian on the planet, and Loki's ritual to Karnilla was his one route back to strength.
The burglar
Dirk Garthwaite — a fired demolition worker robbing his way across the city, famous only for the crowbar he left at each wrecked scene.
The mistake
Helmet logic — Karnilla saw the horns from behind and asked no questions; the enchantment meant for a god landed on a housebreaker.
The fallout
A building on Thor — the empowered Wrecker nearly killed a weakened Thor, and his crowbar later carried the stolen Norn power to the whole Wrecking Crew.
