Today's Fact
Sif's famous black hair was not a birthright or a fashion choice — it was a receipt for a prank and an unpaid bill.
Every reader knows Sif by her raven-black hair, but she was born golden. As retold in Thor: Son of Asgard Vol. 1 #8 (2004), the young Loki, jealous of Thor and Sif's closeness, crept in while she slept and cut off all of her golden hair — then had to replace it before Thor's anger landed on him.
Loki begged the dwarf smiths Brokk and Eitri to craft new hair, but he was either unable or unwilling to pay them in gold. The dwarves settled the account with a craftsman's revenge: for the price of naught, they announced, they would make strands of naught — and spun Sif's new hair out of the blackness of night itself.
The dark strands took root the instant they touched her head and grew like living hair. The sabotage then failed on its own terms: Thor decided Sif looked even more striking with black hair, so Loki's attempt to spoil the romance produced the exact look Asgard now considers definitive — a permanent, growing reminder of his cheapest prank.
Why It's Obscure
One haircut, one unpaid invoice, and a goddess's signature look was settled forever.
