LOKI ACCIDENTALLY INVENTED THE AVENGERS — HIS REVENGE PLOT AGAINST THOR ASSEMBLED EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HEROES IN A SINGLE AFTERNOON!
The Featured Fact

Banished to the Isle of Silence, Loki could not leave his prison, so he sent his astral self hunting across Midgard for a weapon against Thor. Near a railroad line he found the Hulk — and with a flicker of illusion made it look as though the green giant had torn up the tracks in front of an oncoming train.

The frame-up needed an audience, and it got the wrong one. Rick Jones and his Teen Brigade radioed the Fantastic Four for help clearing the Hulk's name; Loki snatched the signal out of the air and steered it toward Thor alone. The broadcast leaked. Iron Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp all heard the call as well, and every one of them came running.

Thor saw through the phantom Hulk, stormed the Isle of Silence and hauled his brother back to Earth in chains, ending the fight. Then the strangers Loki had summoned looked at one another, decided they worked rather well together, and stayed a team — the Wasp supplied the name. In Avengers #1 (1963), the god of mischief's pettiest ambush built the one force that would thwart him for the next sixty years.

Why It's Obscure

He wanted one thunder god in a trap. He got a standing army with a membership roster.

1963
The bait — an illusory train wreck pins a rampage on the Hulk, staged purely to lure Thor within reach of the Isle of Silence.
Radio
The leak — the Teen Brigade's distress call was meant for the Fantastic Four, redirected to Thor, and overheard by three extra heroes Loki never invited.
Mechano
The manhunt — the heroes track the Hulk to a travelling circus, where the strongest man alive is earning a wage juggling animals in robot costume as Mechano.
Radioactive
The last trick — cornered, Loki turns himself radioactive in desperation, and an army of ants drops him through a trapdoor into a lead-lined tank.
Named
The christening — it is the Wasp who names the accidental gathering: the Avengers, assembled entirely by their first villain.
