In Doctor Strange #381 (2017), readers opened on a new tenant at 177A Bleecker Street. Loki — god of mischief, professional liability — was living in the Sanctum Sanctorum, answering magical emergencies, and being introduced, quite calmly, as Earth's Sorcerer Supreme.
The official story was magnificent: the Vishanti, the godlike patrons of the office, had supposedly held a tournament of magic and named Loki the winner. Stephen Strange, accepting the verdict, surrendered the role and quietly retrained his life around veterinary work, a talking dog named Bats, and a great deal of swallowed pride.
Only later did the trick surface. Loki had never won any tournament — he had fooled Strange into believing the Vishanti had chosen him, manufacturing the whole succession so he could hunt for a spell that would bind all of Earth's magic to himself. The con unravelled across Doctor Strange #381–385, in Donny Cates and Gabriel Hernandez Walta's 'Loki: Sorcerer Supreme' arc, and Strange clawed his title back the hard way.
Why It's Obscure
The greatest magic trick Loki ever pulled needed no spell — just a story Strange wanted to believe.
