Today's Fact
Spider-Man's most obsessive hunter did not find his prey on his own. Family sent him.
Sergei Kravinoff did not wander into Spider-Man's life by chance. In The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 #15 (1964), the master of disguise called the Chameleon had already been beaten by the wall-crawler once and deported for his trouble. Wanting the hero dead without risking a rematch, he summoned the greatest hunter he knew: his own half-brother, Kraven.
The brothers share a father and almost nothing else. Chameleon is Dmitri Smerdyakov, the son of the Kravinoff patriarch and a servant in the household, raised inside the family home as staff while Sergei grew up as its heir. Dmitri spent his childhood perfecting impersonations partly to amuse the older boy he idolised, a talent that hardened into his criminal trade.
For the ambush in Central Park, the brothers combined both gifts. Dmitri disguised himself as Kraven and let Spider-Man chase the decoy, while the real hunter, in his lion's-head vest, closed in for the kill. The plan failed, Spider-Man escaped both men, and Sergei walked away with something more dangerous than a contract: a fixation on the one prey that had ever eluded him.
Why It's Obscure
Every obsession has a first phone call, and this one was made by family.
