Today's Fact
The dragon on her shoulder loved her. He was also filing reports on her.
For decades of publication, Lockheed played the perfect pet: a cat-sized purple dragon who breathed fire, hoarded shiny things and adored Kitty Pryde above everyone. What nobody at Xavier's school suspected was that the little alien had a second employer. Lockheed was working as a mole inside the Institute for S.W.O.R.D., the agency that monitors extraterrestrial threats to Earth.
The arrangement was a trade, not a betrayal for hire. S.W.O.R.D. director Abigail Brand had promised help with a crisis on Lockheed's homeworld, and in exchange the dragon quietly reported on the X-Men's activities and flagged anything that needed the agency's attention. He kept the secret through years of missions at Kitty's side.
Brand finally said it out loud during the Breakworld crisis, in the pages of Astonishing X-Men Vol. 3, telling Kitty to stop coddling the dragon like a celebrity's pet and revealing that he spoke more languages than the Beast. Lockheed flew off in shame, and when Kitty was lost inside the giant Breakworld bullet soon after, the two parted with the secret still raw between them.
Why It's Obscure
Man's best friend has nothing on a dragon with a handler.

The spy himself: Lockheed rides Kitty's shoulder in every portrait — which, it turns out, was an excellent listening post.
