Today's Fact

Breakworld's answer to a prophecy that a mutant would destroy their planet was the Retaliator, a hollow-tipped projectile roughly ten miles long, fired at Earth in the closing arc of Astonishing X-Men. Kitty Pryde boarded it mid-flight expecting circuitry she could scramble, and found no guidance system at all — the weapon was a solid bullet, and she had phased herself into its empty nose cone.
With every other hero on the planet reduced to watching, Kitty did the arithmetic nobody else could survive. In Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men #1 (2008) she extended her phasing field around the entire projectile and held it intangible as it crossed the planet, passing the Retaliator through the whole Earth and out the far side without touching a single structure.
The effort fused her situation to the weapon: exhausted and unable to release her power without the bullet regaining solidity amid traffic, ships and worlds, she stayed phased inside it as it sailed on into deep space. Readers waited two real years for her fate, until Magneto, newly restored and eager to earn the X-Men's trust, hauled the bullet home by main magnetic force in Uncanny X-Men #522 (2010) — a rescue that left Kitty, at first, unable to turn solid or even speak.
Why It's Obscure
She once used her power to walk through walls. Her defining feat required walking a planet-killer through the planet.
