Kitty Pryde flew to Japan on a rescue mission of her own making. Her father Carmen's bank was being swallowed by a firm fronting for the Yakuza, and Kitty — freshly heartbroken and in no mood to sit still — tailed him across the Pacific to fix it herself. What she found waiting was Ogun: a demonic ninja master, once Wolverine's own teacher, who looked at a girl who could walk through walls and saw the raw material of a perfect assassin.
Ogun did not bother with years of schooling. He seized Kitty's mind and psychically installed a virtual lifetime of martial arts training, rebuilding her loyalties until his enemies were her targets — and her first assignment was to kill Wolverine. Logan and the wild ronin Yukio fought a masked attacker in Japan before anyone recognised the student under the mask.
Kitty clawed her way back to herself with Wolverine's help, the two forging the teacher-and-student bond that defined them for decades, and together they brought Ogun down. But the six issues of Kitty Pryde and Wolverine (1984–85) did not hand the X-Men their mascot back. The girl who flew home had been taken apart and reassembled by a demon, and she marked the change with the name she has carried ever since: Shadowcat.
Why It's Obscure
A solo trip to Tokyo, a teacher from Wolverine's darkest chapter, and a codename earned the hard way.
