Today's Fact
Verified against independent sources. Issues cited below.
For years Excalibur kept a cheerful floating robot called Widget — a round metal head that opened portals through time and dimensions and tagged along like a mascot. Nobody on the team, Kitty Pryde included, suspected the truth: the spirit riding inside that tin shell was Kitty herself — or rather Kate Pryde, her older self from the Sentinel-ruled Days of Future Past timeline.
The giveaway came in Excalibur #42 (1991), when an inspector named Bert pulled Widget apart to fix its reality-hopping. Inside the supposedly advanced machine he found no real circuitry at all — just old radio parts, decaying baked beans, an apple core and a rubber spider, all animated by a mysterious free-floating energy matrix nobody could identify.
Issues #66–67 finally named that energy: after Kate sent her consciousness back in time to stop Senator Kelly's assassination in Uncanny X-Men #141–142 (1981), her spirit never made it home. It lodged in Widget instead, quietly steering Excalibur's travels for years — meaning Kitty spent that whole era adventuring alongside her own future self without ever knowing it.
Why It's Obscure
Portal-hopping hardware, picnic leftovers, and a passenger nobody thought to look for.
