Today's Fact
Two ancient tablets, one resurrection on offer, and a crime lord who aimed it somewhere nobody predicted.
For years Wilson Fisk hunted the scattered pieces of the Lifeline Tablet, and everyone in New York's underworld — Spider-Man included — assumed the goal was obvious: paired with the Tablet of Death and Entropy, the artifact could restore one dead person to life, and Fisk meant to spend that miracle on his late wife, Vanessa. He put a bounty on Boomerang, hired half the city's crime bosses, and ground a gang war out of the search.
The captive demon Kindred spoiled the plan with one question: what made Fisk think Vanessa would even want to come back to him? Standing before her portrait in Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man: King's Ransom #1 (2021), Fisk conceded the point. Vanessa had died of a broken heart after being forced to kill their own son to protect him, and she would never forgive being chosen over that son.
So the Kingpin spent his single resurrection on Richard Fisk instead. The masked crime lord called the Rose — the son Richard, the rival who had once schemed against his father's empire from the shadows — opened his eyes alive again, resurrected not as a weapon against Spider-Man but as a father's attempt to undo the sin that destroyed his family.
Why It's Obscure
Spider-Man braced for a restored Vanessa and got a restored Rose instead.
